Position Summary Information

Position Purpose

The Head of Instruction and Assessment is responsible for developing, enhancing, and implementing the Library’s assessment program and library instruction services for the University Community. This position has direct responsibility for envisioning goals and setting priorities for the library’s instruction and assessment programs. This includes working closely with the Associate University Librarian for Learning and Engagement, the Head of Research and Outreach, and the Information Literacy Coordinator to integrate

information literacy throughout the curriculum and to support instruction librarians in continuing to develop their instruction skills and pedagogical approaches.

The Head of Instruction and Assessment is also responsible for effectively leading assessment efforts and promoting data-informed decision making to identify and achieve strategic goals and objectives. This includes working with all library units on creating and administering assessment projects and analyzing and presenting the results to inform decision making. This position will use both qualitative and quantitative methods to enrich the assessment of programs and services. They will also develop system(s) for collecting statistical data required for national and regional reporting surveys. They will provide training to library staff on assessment tools and techniques as well as assist library staff with the analysis of research data.

This position will also provide research assistance to students, faculty, and staff; work with faculty as a subject liaison to academic departments; create instructional opportunities for use and evaluation of information resources; and manage and develop collections in assigned subject areas.

The Head of Instruction and Assessment supervises the Information Literacy Coordinator and reports to the Associate University Librarian for Learning and Engagement. This position serves on the Library Management Council, an advisory administrative body made up of the the University Librarian, Associate University Librarians, and unit heads.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Management and Supervision: (30%)
1. Provides vision and leadership in directing and managing library instruction and assessment programs and initiatives
2. Participates in library strategic planning and works collaboratively with other library unit heads and managers to carry out the Library’s strategic goals
3. Directly supervises the Information Literacy Coordinator and may supervise additional staff/students
4. Collaborates with the University Librarian, the Associate University Librarians, and other library unit heads to evaluate, recommend, and implement processes and procedures for measuring the effectiveness of Library-wide activities

5. Collaborates with the Associate University Librarian for Learning and Engagement and the Head of Research and Outreach to improve delivery of instruction
6. Collaborates with the Associate University Librarian for Learning and Engagement and the Information Literacy Coordinator to develop and facilitate integration of information literacy initiatives across the curriculum
7. Works with the Information Literacy Coordinator to evaluate the effectiveness of the information literacy efforts and assess its impact on student learning

2. Assessment Activities (30%)
1. Designs and implements quantitative/qualitative research studies, including the coordination of data collection, data entry, analysis and dissemination of findings with a focus on improving services and demonstrating value
2. Assists library staff in developing assessment research projects that can lead to service improvement
3. Develops, maintains, and archives statistical analyses and accompanying documentation of assessment efforts
4. Prepares reports and presentations that summarize findings of assessment projects
5. Provides consultation/training and documentation to support other library staff in assessment activities
6. Chairs the library committee on assessment
7. Leads a team that administers LibQUAL+ every 3-4 years.
8. Works collaboratively with assessment professionals across SCU
9. Writes annual assessment reports in conjunction with the University Librarian, Associate University Librarians and library managers
10. Coordinates the Library’s response to external requests for statistics and participation in national and regional surveys

3. Teaching, Research, Outreach and Assessment (30%)
1. Provides in-person and virtual research assistance and consultations to students, faculty, staff, and visitors
2. Designs, develops, implements, and assesses in-person and virtual library instruction and technologies
3. Evaluates and selects library material in liaison subject areas to support the University’s curricular and research needs
4. Identifies, implements, and maintains instructional technologies and electronic resources to enhance teaching and learning effectiveness

5. Shares knowledge with library colleagues in instructional technologies, including integration into library instruction tools and platforms (mobile computing, audio/visual technologies, web tutorials, and online learning modules)
6. Works with assigned subject area faculty on scholarly communication issues
7. Assists with library web design and integration of library instructional technology tools
8. Acts as liaison for one or two academic departments

4. Service and Scholarship (10%)
1. Serves on and/or chairs University and University Library committees, working groups, and task forces
2. Participates in local, state, and national/international professional and scholarly societies and organizations
3. Conducts research related to library science and/or another appropriate academic discipline; presents results at conferences and/or through publication

5. Other duties as assigned.

D. GENERAL GUIDELINES

1. Recommends initiatives and implements changes to improve quality and services.
2. Identifies and determines cause of problems; develops and presents recommendations for improvement of established processes and practices.
3. Maintains contact with customers and solicits feedback for improved services.
4. Maximizes productivity through use of appropriate tools; planned training and performance initiatives.
5. Researches and develops resources that create timely and efficient workflow.
6. Prepares progress reports; informs supervisor of project status; and deviation from goals. Ensures completeness, accuracy and timeliness of all operational functions.
7. Prepares and submits reports as requested and required.
8. Develops and implements guidelines to support the functions of the unit.

Provides Work Direction

Directly supervises one or more full-time academic staff (librarian)

Required Qualifications
1. MLS, or equivalent, from an ALA-accredited program
2. Minimum two years of increasingly responsible, professional, relevant work experience in an academic library, with a particular expertise in the delivery of user-centered teaching and library assessment
3. Strong commitment to information literacy instruction, and demonstrated aptitude for teaching in multiple formats in support of students with differing levels of academic preparation
4. Experience delivering teaching and learning modules in-person as well as in an online environment.
5. Experience in designing assessment projects, defining research questions, documenting and analyzing data, and providing recommendations for improvements
6. Experience conducting analyses and creating customized reports using statistical software applications (such as Excel or qualitative analysis software)
7. Knowledge of assessment landscape in higher education
8. Experience with human resource management including supervision, performance appraisals, staff development, and mentoring
9. Demonstrated skills in leadership, interpersonal communication, and creative problem solving
10. Demonstrated commitment to working collaboratively; ability to lead in a shared decision-making environment
11. Demonstrated commitment to and support for diversity and inclusion
12. Record of scholarly ability and community/professional service appropriate for appointment at the rank of Senior Assistant, Associate Librarian or Librarian

Preferred Qualifications
1. Experience with standard data collection activities including those required by state and federal agencies and organizations such as ACRL
2. Knowledge of current technologies for data collection, manipulation, analysis, and reporting
3. Experience in planning and coordinating instruction and assessment projects and programs
4. Experience with assessment tools (such as Scholarly Stats, Google Analytics)
5. Experience with online survey design tools (such as Qualtrics, Survey Monkey, and Google forms)
6. Knowledge of current technologies for data collection, manipulation, analysis, and reporting
7. Ability to learn and assess new software and electronic tools
8. Experience using Content Management Systems (Canvas and LibGuides), Camtasia, HTML

Knowledge

Appointment Level:

This position is included in the Academic Staff Librarian category. The specific level at which an appointment is made is determined by the successful candidate’s level of experience and professional accomplishment. Minimum qualifications for those ranks are:

Senior Assistant Librarian (salary grade 10): at least two years professional experience after receiving the MLS; evidence of scholarly ability (e.g., additional coursework, conference presentations, publications) and professional or community service (e.g., active participation in professional society activities,

involvement in committee or other service work at previous employers or community organizations) appropriate for an early-career librarian.

Associate Librarian (salary grade 11): at least five years professional experience after receiving the MLS; evidence of scholarly ability (e.g., additional coursework or advanced degrees, conference presentations, publications) and professional or community service (e.g., active participation in professional society activities, involvement in committee or other service work at previous employers or community organizations) appropriate for a mid-career librarian.

Librarian (salary grade 12): at least seven years professional experience after receiving the MLS; evidence of scholarly ability (e.g., additional coursework or advanced degrees, conference presentations, publications) and professional or community service (e.g., active participation in professional society activities, involvement in committee or other service work at previous employers or community organizations) appropriate for a senior librarian.

Salary Information Hiring Range: $2668.83 - $4350 semi-monthly, commensurates with experience and education
